This page is designed to provide information and to help answer any questions you may have regarding your upcoming visit to the surgical center. Before Surgery
- You will receive a call from a pre-screening nurse a week before your surgery to review your health history, medications, and pre-op instructions.
- Check-in times will be given to patients the day before surgery.
- Do not eat any food after 11:00 PM the night before your surgery. This includes mints, gum, and candy. If you are taking a GLP Agonist for diabetes or weight loss (i.e. Ozempic, Victoza), you will have a longer fast requirement and will need to follow the guidelines outlined in the document “GLP Fasting Guidelines.” This can be found under the Patient Forms section of the website.
- You may drink clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to your scheduled check-in time. Clear liquids include water, fruit juices without pulp (i.e. apple juice, grape juice), soda & sports drinks, clear tea or black coffee without creamer. Clear liquids DO NOT include alcohol, orange/grapefruit juice, broth, milk or dairy products.
- No smoking or vaping after midnight the night before surgery.
The Day of Surgery
- Take only essential medications that you were told to take with a sip of water.
- Shower the morning of your surgery, but do not put on any lotions, perfumes/cologne, or makeup.
- Deodorant is ok except for procedures performed close to the axillary region (i.e. shoulder or breast surgery).
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- You may wear glasses, but no contact lenses.
- All valuables (i.e. jewelry, watches, money) should be left at home.
- Bring a picture ID, insurance cards, and copayment if applicable.
- It is important that you arrive promptly at your scheduled check-in time.
- Arrange for a family member or friend to wait in the waiting room. You must have a responsible adult drive you home.
- Please limit visitors to two adults and no children.
- We encourage you to ask any questions you might have and let us know of any special needs.
After Surgery
- It is important to have someone stay with you and look after you for 24 hours after your surgery.
- Dizziness and drowsiness is normal after receiving anesthesia; therefore, you should wait 24 hours after returning home before:
- Driving or operating equipment
- Signing important papers
- Making significant decisions
- Drinking alcohol
- Taking any medications that are not prescribed or acknowledged by your surgeon
- Be sure to follow any specific post operative instructions given to you by your physician regarding diet, activity level, medications, and surgical site care. A written summary of these will be provided to you upon discharge.
- Notify your doctor if you notice any abnormalities at the operative site.
- You will receive a post-op call from a nurse the following business day who will check-up on you and answer any questions you may have.
